Care & Maintenance

Jarrah Wood (Jensen Jarrah)

The amount of care required for your Jensen Jarrah furniture is directly related to the amount of exposure to weather. If untreated the outer surface (skin) of Jarrah will naturally weather to a soft gray color. However, the original color spectrum can be maintained with the regular use of Jarrah Colourguard Plus. (a water-based oil finish available at Potter Brothers)

Furniture Fittings- We recommend under normal conditions to check fitting 6-12 months and re-tighten accordingly.

Re-Coating Frequency- Generally, re-coating furniture twice a year is sufficient when the furniture is fully exposed to weather. However, more frequent re-coating may be required in very wet climates. In a fully protected environment (verandah or covered area) re-coating once a year may be sufficient.

Teak (Gloster)

Teak is a natural material, which will change color with time and exposure to the surrounding climate. When left to age naturally outside, the exposed surface of timber will become a soft silvery-grey color. Many people like to maintain this natural silvery-grey color, in which case we recommend simply cleaning the furniture once a year with Teak Cleaner. However, for those who prefer to retain the warm golden brown color of teak, we recommend the following products:

Teak Cleaner- The first stage when restoring weathered furniture. An extremely powerful detergent based solution, which removes all dirt, grease and moisture from the timber surface.

Teak Brightener- The second stage. It penetrates deep into the timber, dissolving away any remaining grease and oils and opening up the pores of the wood. The bleaching action of the brightener helps to restore some of the surface color of the timber.

Teak Sealer- The ultimate protection for new or restored teak. A unique blend of natural oils, polymeric additives and light pigments, which seals out water, provides protection from harmful UV rays and prevents the wood from turning grey or black.

Brazilian Cherry (New River)

Natural Brazilian Cherry will weather to a lovely grey patina over time and requires no regular maintenance, other than occasional cleaning with soap and water with a soft bristled brush. Because Brazilian Cherry is red-colored throughout, the original color can be extended and restored with simple maintenance. Ask a Potter Brothers associate for step-by-step instructions. Painted Outdoor Elements products can be cleaned with soap and water as needed. A mild solution of bleach and water can be used if any mildewing occurs. As the finish weathers, your Outdoor Elements can be touched up or refinished with any exterior grade paint.

Wrought Iron (Woodard)

Clean with warm, soapy water. Damage to the paint finish may cause corrosion, touch up with paint immediately. To maintain the gloss on non-textured finishes, protect with a fine automotive wax. On textured finishes, periodically apply mineral or baby oil.

Frame finish touch up instructions- When covering small spots of surface rust, clean area by sanding lightly and wipe immediately to prevent rust. When preparing scratched areas for touch up paint, rub lightly with a fine steel wool to smooth the surface and improve paint adhesion. Apply thin coats of touch-up paint and allow ample drying time between coats.

Aluminum/Cast Aluminum(Telescope, Outdoor Designs)

Aluminum Frames- To keep furniture looking new, use Soft Scrub or similar non-abrasive products to remove scuff marks and scratches.

Telaweave Mesh- Soak the entire area with warm water and detergent. A small amount of chlorine bleach can be added to remove stubborn stains.

Storage

Whenever possible, store your furniture indoors for the winter, or use a protective cover. Make sure all frames, cushions and fabrics are clean and dry before they are stored or covered.
